Country singing artist and television host Susie Dobbs will serve as the 2010 Bishop Mule Days Grand Marshal.
Dobbs is perhaps best known as the co-host of RFD-TV's Beyond Rodeo alongside legendary rodeo announcer Hadley Barrett. However, Susie Dobbs is much more than just another pretty face on television. With three albums and a series of nationwide tours under her belt, Dobbs has quickly become one of Country music's rising stars. Among her accolades, performing at the prestigious Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, being named Entertainer of the Year by the Chicago Tribune, and serving as the opening act for many top entertainers including Lonestar, who is headlining this year's Mule Days concert.
Of her albums, Dobbs feels her third, the self-titled Susie Dobbs, best represents her style of music. "With my other albums I was pushed into doing overproduced bubble gum pop/country. It wasn’t me at all. If there is one thing I have learned from being in (Nashville) it's that I am not going to fall for that crap. I know what kind of music I do and I won’t take the time to apologize for it,” she said.
The North Platte, Nebraska native also isn’t apologetic that her album features a true country shuffle with songs like “I’d Break Your Heart (If You Had One)," a showcased crying fiddle on "Walk Away," edgier songs like "Damn That Radio," and the heartbreaking waltz on “Lonely Alone.”
"Here's the biggest secret to country music: If you are going to sing country you have to live it; I do. I can team rope. I can send you running around the parking lot, grab you by the heels and knock ya down. I'm not just playing country dress-up. Country music isn’t a genre for me, it's my real life," Dobbs said.
And following in the footsteps of the 2008 and 2009 Grand Marshals rodeo legend Larry Mahan and actor / artist Buck Taylor, Dobbs will be one busy lady when she is in Bishop during the Memorial Day weekend. Not only will she serve as Grand Marshal, but she will also headline the May 26th Opening Night Supper, reprise her previous experience as the opening act for the May 27th Lonestar concert, and bring the house down with the Way Out West Band at the Saturday, May 29th dance. She will also perform the National Anthem during the weekend mule shows. Oh, and it's a pretty sure bet she will film segments for Beyond Rodeo during her stay.
The task of selecting a Grand Marshal is not an easy one. Each year the president of Mule Days Executive Board is charged with finding someone who will not only represent Mule Days well, but who will also bring a certain joie de vivre to the event.
For MC Hubbard, the 2010 president, Susie Dobbs was the only choice after the pair met at the recent Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. "Susie has a unique energy that she brings to everything she does," Hubbard said. "You see it in her interviews on Beyond Rodeo and you can definitely hear it in her voice when she sings, and boy, can she sing!"
