Caltrans and Mule Days Celebration to Ensure Safe Pedestrian Sidewalks
Bishop – With the Bishop Mule Days event rapidly approaching, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) would like to remind the public of their goal to provide safe access for pedestrians on downtown sidewalks days before the Mule Days Parade.
To facilitate providing safe access on the sidewalks, please do not place chairs or other objects on the sidewalk (or within the State Right of Way) prior to Saturday, May 26th, 2018. With this in mind, Caltrans will remove unattended chairs or other objects. All chairs (or other objects) will be securely stored and can be claimed by the owners at our local office at 500 South Main Street in Bishop during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please note, the office will be closed between Friday, May 25, 5:00 pm and Tuesday, May 29, 8:00 am for the Memorial Day Weekend and Holiday.
Caltrans is mandated to maintain a sidewalk free of obstructions in order to promote safety and enhance accessibility for pedestrians. This has been significantly constrained due to the large number of chairs and other obstructions roped, chained or otherwise strung together on the sidewalk for days before the parade. Caltrans appreciates your understanding and cooperation. Enjoy the parade!
Note: Caltrans authority to remove unauthorized objects is contained in California Streets and Highways Code Section 721, and unattended chairs or other objects are a violation of California Vehicle Code Section 23112.7.
